What can aesthetic surgery offer?
- The face: Facelift surgery is now increasingly common as patients become unhappy with visible necklines, drooping jowls and general facial ageing. These are problems that a conventional face-lift is best for. Eyelid surgery may be done separately or together with a face-lift to improve on the developing lines around the eyes. A brow lift may be carried out for a slack, lined forehead, especially when there is hooding of the upper eyelid
- The nose: surgery to improve appearance of the nose has always been popular amongst women, but is also gaining in popularity with younger patients and men. Not only can a nose be made smaller, but also the bridge can be made more prominent with the use of a graft
- The chin: chin augmentation is carried out on its own or in conjunction with a rhinoplasty (surgery to the nose)
- Ears: The most common operation is the correction of prominent or bat ears. Traditionally an operation carried out in childhood, but increasingly also being requested by older patients. Other procedures often asked for are the repair of split earlobes
- Breast reduction: This involves making breasts smaller while trying to attain as natural a breast shape as possible. Sometimes just one breast is involved
- Breast augmentation: implants are used to make breasts larger; sometimes just one breast may need to be enlarged to match the opposite breast
- Mastopexy: This is a breast tightening operation where excess skin is removed and the shape of the breast brought back to normal, some patients also have implants put in at this operation
- Breast reconstruction: Patients who have had uni or bilateral mastopexies may wish to have breasts reconstructed. The aim here is to construct aesthetically pleasing breasts
- Abdomen: The ‘tummy tuck’ is an operation which can help to restore the shape of the abdomen by removing excess skin
- Liposuction: - a technique whereby fat is removed through a small tube from the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, calves, neck etc. It is most effective not as a weight reducing procedure but as a sculpting tool at the end of a weight loss programme
- There are also many other procedures to improve the appearance of the thighs or buttocks, treatment of excess breast tissue in men (gynaecomastia) and smaller procedures to remove birth marks, thread veins and skin dermabrasion treatments to improve the texture of the skin or other skin defects
The above covers procedures most commonly carried out, a patient’s individual needs can only be decided after carefully evaluating what the patient wants and what type of surgery is most appropriate and the expected outcomes of that surgery.
